USMMA Women Fall in Historic Lacrosse Opener

Academy women compete in lacrosse for first time in school history at Wesley.

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's lacrosse team took to the field for the first time in history Saturday but came up short of its first victory in a 16-2 loss to Wesley in Dover, Del.

Alexandra Winfree from Millstone, N.J., netted the first goal in team history with Elizabeth Noonan from Charlottesville, Virg., with the assist.  

Kristen Bell, of New City, N.Y., contributed an unassisted marker of her own while goaltender Kelly Allison of Palos Verdes, Calif., registered six saves between the pipes.

Wesley (1-1) outshot the Mariners, 25-8, including 22-6 in shots on goal.  Wesley opened the game with nine straight goals.

The USMMA women's lacrosse team next plays Mount St. Vincent March 12 at 5 p.m. at Brooks Stadium in Kings Point.
