Petition Demands Halt to Divisive Power Line

An online petition calling for a halt to PSEG Long Island’s power line installation project between Great Neck and Port Washington has already gathered more than 500 signatures.

The recently launched Change.org petition is in response to news that PSEG Long Island will be holding a public meeting at the Harbor Links Clubhouse in Port Washington on Monday, March 24, at 7 p.m. 

To Patch readers, the meeting date is set too far in advance.

“PSEG will have made it up to Northern BLVD with the installation of these poles” by then, one resident commented on Patch.

Launched by a group that calls itself “Keep the North Shore Beautiful,” the petition aims to prompt officials to stop work immediately on the installation project.

The petition reads: “We aim to preserve the beauty and charm of our neighborhoods and the health of our residents and implore PSEG and our elected officials to stop the erection of these 80 foot poles and high voltage cables and engage in dialogue and debate over viable alternatives!”

Residents from Sands Point, Port Washington, Manhasset, Great Neck and even New York have signed the Change.org petition , which will be delivered to PSEG Long Island, North Hempstead Councilwoman Dina De Giorgio, North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth, Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel, Sen. Jack Martins and Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

In assessing customer demand, PSEG reliability engineers determined that there was a critical need for new transmission circuits to reliably serve customers now, Jeffrey Weir, a PSEG Long Island Spokesman, told Patch.
