This Week In GN: Schimel, Rice, Geller

Five things going on this week on the peninsula.

Schimel, Rice at Arts Center For Film Screening Thursday: A unique blend of local officials and movie experts will be on hand at the Great Neck Arts Center April 11 to discuss ways modern technology affects and defines daily relationships at a preview of the film Disconnect, part of the Great Neck Arts Center's Furman Film Series. The plot of the movie revolves around a group of strangers, neighbors, and colleagues who's stories collide as they struggle to connect in today’s wired world. Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice and state Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel, D-Great Neck, will join Aviad Bernstein, a performer in the film, to discuss the subject matter of the thriller which is expected to resonate with adults and teens.

Pinkberry Job Fair on Wednesday: Pinkberry is hiring in Great Neck. The company announced on its website open positions for store team members, assistant managers and fruit cutters. A hiring fair will be held at the Great Neck location, 69 Middle Neck Rd., on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

"La Bohème" This Weekend:  South High School's music department's annual opera will feature La Bohème, by Giacomo Puccini. Performances will be held April 12 and 13. Both performances begin at 8 p.m. The professional-like opera is a student production from the singers who will perform in Italian (with English supertitles) to the musicians in the orchestra. South High has been involved in performing operas for over 40 years, and it is one of the few non-specialized public high schools in the nation with an active opera program, according to the district website. Pamela Geller in Great Neck Sunday: Pamela Geller, executive director of the American Freedom Defense Initiative and Stop Islamization of America, has been invited to speak by the Great Neck Synagogue Men’s Club on Sunday. A coordinated campaign is underway by a prominent Nassau County official to intimidate Great Neck Synagogue leadership into cancelling the speech, according to several sources.

Great Neck Social Center Veterans Social Club: The Great Neck Senior Center will present Sunday, April 12, Life Review Specialist Sue Salko and Ron Gross of Columbia University, as they speak about the strategies that helped the U.S. win back-to-back world wars. Refreshments will be served. The event begins at 2 p.m.
