Longtime GN Resident Vilma Farman Dies at 78

South African immigrant passes Dec. 31.

Vilma Farman of Great Neck died Dec. 31 at the age of 78.

Admitted to the Bar in South Africa, a rarity for a woman at the time in the 1960s, Farman contributed to a book about a banned person in when to do so meant the possibility of jail or being banned herself.

After emigrating with her family from South Africa to the New Haven, Conn., more than 40 years ago, Farman and her family later moved to Great Neck.

Farman owned Pied Piper Toys in the Americana in Manhassett along with her partner, Dorrit Ger.

She is survived by her husband, Jack, their children Nicola, Lance, Jessica, Brian, Peter and Gayle, and grandchildren, Sloan, Emma and Katie.

Her passions included glass art, music, dance and politics and most of all laughter.
