New Hyde Park

A car overturned at Lakeville Road and Bryant Avenue with a person trapped inside on November 12 at 9:20 a.m. The extent of the injuries was unknown.

Mineola

An SUV and mini-school carrying special needs children bus collided on Jericho Turnpike in Mineola at about 4:14 p.m. on November 13. Specifics of how the accident occurred were not immediately known. At least two persons were transported to area hospitals including an aide and several of the special needs children. The extent of their injuries is not currently know

Manhasset

A Whitestone man was arrested for unlawful surveillance on Nov. 11 at 5:45 p.m. in Manhasset. According to detectives, a 58 year old female victim observed Michael Seghposs, 25, homeless, taking a video of her in the restroom of King Kullen at 1430 Northern Blvd. He was taking the video from an adjacent stall, holding his phone under the partition, without her consent. The defendant attempted to flee on foot before being apprehended by store employees who held him until police arrived. Seghposs is charged with second degree unlawful surveillance and was arraigned on Nov. 12, at First District Court in Hempstead. Roslyn Heights

A gas main was struck and ruptured at 250 Powerhouse Road on November 16 at 10:22 a.m. when a car collided with a building.

Westbury

A truck hit an overpass on the westbound side of the Northern State Parkway at Brush Hollow Road on Nov. 11 at 6:47 p.m. Nassau County Police responded to the scene requesting assistance from fire department, EMS and New York State Police for the accident.

The homicide squad with the assistance of Panama City Police along with the U.S. Department of State, the U.S. Marshalls Office, the Diplomatic Security Service, the United States Embassy in Panama city, the Servicio Nacional de Imigracion, the NY/NJ Port Authority and the Nassau County District Attorneys Office reported the arrest of Sebastian R. Barba, 35, for allegedly hitting an 80 year-old Westbury woman on Feb. 6, 2001 at 10:05 a.m. as she was crossing Post Avenue at the intersection of Maple Avenue. The force of the collision forced the victim onto the hood of the vehicle. According to the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office, Barba then applied the brakes, causing the victim, who was still alive and moving at the time, to fall to the ground in front of the vehicle. Barba then slowly drove over the victim’s chest with the front tires and her head with the back tires while a witness screamed at him to stop. After striking the victim, the dark colored auto fled southbound from the scene without identifying himself or aiding the victim and then fled to Ecuador, where he has dual citizenship. The victim, Jean Renison, was taken to Nassau University Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. A grand jury indicted Barba shortly thereafter and a warrant was issued for his arrest. Barba was later featured on a May 2005 episode of America’s Most Wanted. Barba has been charged with second degree murder and leaving the scene of an accident with serious physical injury. He has been remanded to the Nassau County Correctional Facility. 

Hicksville

A hit and run accident occurred on West John Street and Gardner Avenue on November 14 at 9:32 p.m. Hicksville Fire Department units were on scene and requested EMS for the person aided and police for the vehicle who fled the scene.

A gas leak was reported within a commercial building at 290 Duffy Ave. on November 16 at 10:43 a.m.

Woodbury

Police are investigating a robbery that occurred in Woodbury on Nov. 15 at 11:35 a.m. According to detectives, a 60-year old male victim arrived at 60 Crossways Park Drive West and exited his vehicle. A white SUV approached and two unknown male black subjects exited the vehicle and confronted the victim. One subject while displaying a handgun demanded the victim’s wristwatch and struck him in the side of the head knocking him to the ground. The subjects then removed the wristwatch from the victim, re-entered the vehicle and fled the scene in an unknown direction. The victim sustained minor lacerations to his wrist and knees but refused medical assistance. Both subjects are described as being approximately 25 years old, 5’10” tall, wearing dark colored pants, dark colored hooded sweatshirts and bandanas over their faces. Franklin Square

A fire was reported in the basement of a house at 827 Rutgers Rd. on Nov. 16 at 8:29 p.m.

Garden City

Garden City police have confirmed the arrest of Artie Jackson, the suspect wanted in connection with the occupied home invasion on Third Street on Nov. 8 when four Garden City homes within the Central section were burglarized. One was an occupied burglary where a weapon was displayed and shots fired into the ceiling. No one was injured but police state Jackson fled with many personal belongings, including the family's car which was later recovered in Hempstead. The prior evening, on Nov. 7, a similar occupied burglary occurred within the Cathedral Gardens section of the Village of Hempstead. Jackson 46, of Hempstead, was arrested in Hempstead Sunday evening; Garden City detectives were part of the “apprehension effort.”

While on special patrol in residential areas that were without power on Nov. 9, officers observed a suspicious male on Wetherill Road. Upon an investigation, the subject, a male 38-year-old from Mineola, was arrested for an outstanding Nassau County Family Court warrant.

On Nov. 11, officers observed a 41-year-old male from Mineola driving a Porsche recklessly on Old Country Road at a high rate of speed (80 mph in a 20 mph zone), unsafely moving from lane to lane and passing other motorists on the right shoulder. He was stopped on Mineola Blvd. and arrested for reckless driving, speeding and four counts of lane usage violations.

West Hempstead

Marcus Pettway, 25, of Rockville Centre, was arrested on Nov. 13 and charged with robbing the Bank of America located at 60 Hempstead Ave. in West Hempstead.

Albert Hendrickson, 52, and his wife, Darlene Schunk-Hendrickson, 50, both of West Hempstead, were arrested on Nov. 10 and charged with four counts of robbery (first and second degree) and criminal use of a firearm in the first degree after police say they stole a necklace and ring from one of their dinner guests and then threatened the couple with a shotgun.
