Oakland Gardens Student Dies in Fraternity Ritual

A Baruch College student from Oakland Gardens died earlier this week while taking part in a fraternity ritual, the New York Times reported.

Chun Hsien Deng, a freshman at Baruch, died after suffering “major brain trauma” while taking part in a ritual known as the Glass Ceiling, during which a fraternity pledge is blindfolded, has a heavy item placed on his back and must navigate his way to a person calling to him while others try to tackle him.

Deng, who is from Oakland Gardens, was taking part in the game last weekend in the Poconos, where Pi Delta Psi was holding a retreat, and died on Monday, the Times reported.

Police and the county’s district attorney are investigating the incident.

Glen Cove Fugitive Apprehended After Year and a Half Pursuit

A fugitive wanted for attempted murder in a July 2012 shooting was apprehended by the long arm of the law on Wednesday.

On July 12, 2012 shots rang out at 246 Glen Street when police say John Lembo, 47, fired on two victims, hitting one in the neck and causing extensive internal injuries. Lembo left the area immediately after the incident and couldn't be located –up until now.

Glen Cove Police Detective Chris Albin, investigating the case with the New York/New Jersey- U.S. Marshalls Fugitive Task Force, located and arrested Lembo in Brooklyn on Wednesday after a year and a half pursuit.

Lembo was charged with two counts of second degree attempted murder, second degree criminal possession of a weapon and first degree criminal use of a firearm. He was arraigned Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead.

Man Robbed at Gunpoint Outside Syosset McDonald's

A Massapequa man has been arrested after he allegedly held up a teenager outside a McDonald's on Jericho Turnpike in Syosset.

Nassau County police said the victim had agreed to meet the man at the fast-food store's parking lot to complete the sale of three pairs of Nike Air Jordan sneakers he had advertised online.

Police said Joseph Alessi, 23, pulled out a black handgun and took off with the sneakers, which had a combined worth of $880. No injuries were reported.

Alessi is being charged with first-degree robbery and first-degree criminal use of a firearm. He is being arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Saturday.

Update: Port Firefighter Charged with Soliciting EMT Test-Taker Pleads Guilty

Bernard  Shore, a Port Washington man charged with soliciting an impersonator to take his EMT certification exam for him, pleaded guilty today to official misconduct, a Class A misdemeanor, according to a representative from Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice.

According to the DA's office, Shore was sentenced by Judge Scott Fairgrieve to a conditional discharge, with the conditions as follows:

• Shore may not attempt to certify as an EMT with New York state.
• Shore must forfeit any pension or pension credits earned from 2010 through present.
• Shore must pay back real estate tax credit from 2010 to present.
• Shore must pay a $500 fine.
