No Power for Thousands in Great Neck

LIPA map shows multiple outages from Kings Point to Lake Success.

Much of the Great Neck peninsula is still without power Wednesday after superstorm Sandy barreled through Long Island Monday night.

According to a Long Island Power Authority, crews have yet to be assigned to some of the reported outages.

At least 3,000 in Great Neck Plaza are without electricity as of noon, while in Kings Point more than 2,000 customers are still powerless, according to LIPA.

Numerous trees were felled by the storm, continue to block off some streets and roads.

To report an outage to LIPA, call 1-800-490-0075 or text 'REG' to 695472 (myLIPA) and then 'OUT.' For more important emergency contacts, tips and links, click here.

In a statement, LIPA urged customers to "prepare and plan for power outages, which based on the current track could last between 7 to 10 days."

The utility company also reminded customers to:

  • Never touch or go near fallen wires, even if you think they are safe. Parents can use this opportunity to remind children that wires are dangerous. If you are in a vehicle that comes in contact with a downed wire, stay in your vehicle until help arrives.
  • Make sure you have a working, battery powered radio or TV and a good supply of fresh replacement batteries.
  • Have flashlights available for all family members.
  • If an electric pump supplies your water, fill spare food-grade containers with water for cooking and washing in anticipation of a possible power interruption.
  • Make sure all motor driven equipment, such as garage door openers, can be operated manually.
  • When using a portable generator, make sure all LIPA-powered equipment is disconnected. This will avoid severe hazards when reconnecting the power to your home or business.
  • Have a first aid kit at home and check its contents to make sure they are complete and up to date. If you have family members with special medical needs, such as insulin or other prescription drugs, check to make sure you have an adequate supply.
  • Do not use charcoal to cook indoors; deadly carbon monoxide gas can accumulate in your home.
  • If you have an elderly neighbor, be a Good Samaritan and check on his or her status. Even a quick telephone call during a storm can provide much appreciated assurance that help is nearby if needed.
  • Should an electric power interruption occur, all sensitive equipment, such as computers and TVs should be disconnected until service is restored

While LIPA does not provide generators to customers, if you have a generator we remind you to use it safely.

Advice requested - I'm meant to be flying into NY from Australia on Saturday (to visit family in Great Neck, right on Middle Neck Rd near the intersection of Cedar.) I've only been able to reach them once via mobile phone, and their power is still out.
Any educated guesses if power will be restored by Saturday?

Based on what I've seen in terms of the massive scale that LIPA is dealing with, no, the power probably will not be restored fully by Saturday. The trees on the roads and power lines are taking some time to clear out.

Isn't this Wendy Kreitzman's husband? Of course, Wendy - the lying editor at the Great NeckRead More Record!!! How cozy of you both - I sent in a letter to Anton Press regarding Wendy's erroneous and biased coverage of Pamela Geller's appearance at the Chabad in Great Neck and never received an answer. I didn't really expect to either. But why would we continue to support establishment candidates when the systems continue to fail, property taxes continue to rise, services continue to decrease, corruption on every level from local to federal exists, and you have a complicit media with your own wife at the helm. I don't think so!
