Great Neck's Alert Engine, Hook, Ladder & Hose Co., No. 1 was recognized last week for extraordinary service during and after Superstorm Sandy and the ensuing Nor’easter that struck Long Island late last year.
The unit responded to hundreds of calls from residents for assistance of every kind, countless times in life threatening situations, and for housing as many as 30 out-of-state emergency electrical and gas line workers at a time in the two firehouses, according to Nassau County Legis. Judi Bosworth, D-Great Neck, who honored the group with a citation at the unit's firehouse on Middle Neck Road.
Bosworth commended the Alerts for bravery, kindness and compassion displayed to residents and visitors during the crisis.
Chief Raymond Plakstis accepted the citation on behalf of officers and members of the Alert company.
