GN Estates Mayor Honored by Shomrim Society

Great Neck Estates Mayor David Fox was honored Sunday by the Nassau County Shomrim Society.

Fox, who serves as police commissioner for the village, was presented with the Janusz Korczak Award at an annual breakfast ceremony at the Great Neck Synagogue.

Based in Mineola, the Nassau County Shomrim Society was founded in 1962 to promote the religious spirit of police officer's of the Jewish faith and their families. The group's membership includes law enforcement officers from Nassau and Suffolk counties.

Also at the ceremony, Scott Horowitz was named Shomrim Society’s 2012 Person of the Year.

On hand for the event was Nassau County Legislators Judy Jacobs and Judi Bosworth, North Hempstead Councilwoman Lee Seeman and New York State Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel.

Born in Poland, Janusz Korczak was a Jewish educator, children's author and doctor. He was director of an orphanage in Warsaw during World War II and later sent to Treblinka extermination camp where he died in 1942.
