League of Women Voters to Host Debates

State, congressional candidates set to go head-to-head Oct. 23.

Candidates running for federal and state offices serving parts of the North Shore of Long Island will square off at a debate sponsored by the League of Women Voters on Oct. 23. 

The event begins at 6 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Manhasset.

The night's first debate features the four candidates vying to represent the redrawn U.S. Congressional District 3, which was held by Peter T. King until 2012 redistricting. Sparring for this District 3 seat will be former-District 2 incumbent, Rep. Steve Israel, D-Dix Hills; Republican Stephen A. Labate of Deer Park; Libertarian Michael McDermott of Huntington Station; and Anthony Tolda from the Constitution party.

At 7 p.m., incumbent New York District 16 Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel, D-Great Neck, will face challenger, Richard Stiek, a Republican from Port Washington.

The final debate begins at 8 p.m. between incumbent NYS District 7 Senator Jack Martins, R- Mineola, and his Democratic opponent Daniel S. Ross of Manhasset.

U.S. Congressional District 3 includes all of the North Shore of Nassau County plus towns and villages on the North Shore of Suffolk County from Cold Spring Harbor to Smithtown, and the eastern north shore of Queens from Malba to Little Neck down to Bellaire.  

New York State Senatorial District 7 includes all communities in the Town of North Hempstead as well as areas around Mineola, New Hyde Park and Hicksville.  

New York State Assembly District 17 includes most of North Hempstead including the Port Washington and Great Neck peninsulas.  

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation is located at 48 Shelter Rock Rd. in Manhasset between Northern Boulevard and the Long Island Expressway. Entrance is through white gates on the west side of the road. Small sandwich wraps, along with coffee and cookies, will be available by 5:30 p.m. for those who do not have time to eat before the first 6 p.m. debate, according to event organizers.
