Great Neck Schools Out All Week

Communications hampered by BOCES system outage; district buildings on generator power.

In a message sent to parents Wednesday, Great Neck School District classes were called off for the remainder of the week.

District Superintendent Thomas Dolan made the call via the emergency system at 3:19 p.m. to those with operational phones.

With the school district website down since Monday night, emails and  have been cut off from the outside world to the school district lines. Emails within the school district are functional according to school officials, but emails from outside cannot be recieved until the system is restored.

Great Neck School District Technology Director Mark Epstein said the school system website and emails are linked to the main Board Of Cooperative Education System based in Westbury. The system is linked to other districts throughout Long Island.

It is unclear where the main outage occured on the BOCES system, according to Epstein. Restoration responsibility rests with the Long Island Power Authority, he said.

"The BOCES situation is really reliant on LIPA," said Epstein to Patch.

Parents, faculty, and staff are notified by the district of closings through the ParentLink System, through a server based out of state.

Gas-powered generators in district buildings were running Wednesday.

Emails to Dolan from Patch have been returned throughout the week with an error message.
