Report: Great Neck South Among Nation's Top 500 High Schools

The findings are according to an annual list by U.S. News & World Report.

William A. Shine Great Neck South High School is one of the top performing schools in the country, according to this year’s U.S. News & World Report high school rankings.

Of the 500 best high schools in the country, Great Neck ranks 115th, and 21st in New York State, according to the report. The school had a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) rank of 25.

The study looked at more than 19,400 public high schools, and takes into account such factors as participation rate in Advanced Placement courses and exams. In addition to test scores, the list also provides a breakdown of minority enrollment, the percentage of economically disadvantaged students enrolled, and the number of full-time teachers at the school.

Great Neck South’s AP participation rate is 79 percent. Its student body makeup is 53 percent male and 47 percent female, and the total minority enrollment is 54 percent.

The school scored 73.8 on the lists College Readiness Index, 3.7 on math proficiency, 3.7 on English proficiency, and has a student-teacher ratio of 12:1.

Other schools in the area within the top 500 are in Garden City, Rockville Centre Syosset, New Hyde Park, Port Washington, Plainview and Half Hollow Hills.
