Dan Marino Draws up Play for High Schooler

Great Neck North QB Brian Kahen gets defense-busting advice from Hall of Famer.

When Dan Marino comes to town, why not pick the brain of a Hall of Fame quarterback?

That was Brian Kahen's bold plan Friday. Wearing his Great Neck North football jersey, the senior quarterback asked Marino to draw up a defense-busting play.

And Marino, a prolific passer for the Miami Dolphins before becoming a CBS football analyst, obliged.

"I just asked him if he knew any plays that could help me beat the cover 2 [zone defense]," Kahen said. "He just drew up a nice play for me."

Marino was in Great Neck Friday to help open Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza, the 40th location of the Florida-based restaurant chain he's a partner in.

While most on hand swarmed Marino looking for a photo op or an autograph, Kahen handed the NFL great a scrap of paper and asked for a diagram.

"We're playing Jericho tomorrow and he drew me a nice cover 2 beater," Kahen said.

Great Neck North hits the road to face Jericho (0-2) in a Nassau Conference V game Saturday at 3 p.m. The Blazers are off to a 2-0 start after wins over St. Dominic and Long Island Lutheran.

Will Dan the Man's play tip the balance on the field? Who knows. But the simple exchange – from one quarterback to another – was a winner.
