Mariners Fall to Guilford in Men's Lax

USMMA off to a 1-2 start in 2013.

The United States Merchant Marine Academy was defeated by the Guilford College Quakers in men's lacrosse afternoon Saturday in Greensboro, N.C.

Freshman attacker John Atkinson of Garden City, N.Y., led Mariners (1-2) in scoring with a goal and two assists; recording his first career points as a Mariner.

The lead was tied 1-1 at one at the 9:45 mark of the first quarter before the Quakers went on a scoring run to take a 6-2 advantage into the break.

USMMA sophomore goalkeeper Alex Peyreigne of Weston, Conn., stopped 11 of the 22 shots on net.

The Mariners were unable to come away with the victory despite dominating the faceoff circle 14-6. Freshman midfielder Chris Whitenack of East Meadow, N.Y., took all 20 draws for Kings Point, picking up a team-high four groundballs.

Merchant Marine will return to action March 13 at Throgs Neck against rival Maritime College at 7 p.m.
