USMMA Falls to Catholic in Landmark Hoops Tourney

Mariners come up short in upset bid Wednesday.

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's basketball team fell to top-seeded Catholic University in the Landmark Conference semifinals Wednesday.

The Mariners (14-12) kept it close but lost 65-57 on the road at the DeFour Center in Washington, D.C.

After leading by two at the half, Catholic (23-3) pushed its lead to 40-30 before a Merchant Marine rally made it 43-40 with 14:28 remaining in the game.

A three-pointer by USMMA with 36.7 seconds left made the score 62-57, but that was as close as the Mariners got. In the closing seconds, a Mariner foul led to a Catholic player hitting one-of-two at the charity stripe, with USMMA missing a three point attempt on its last possession.

Catholic will play Juniata for the conference title.

Reed Buck led all Mariners scorers with 26 points while Nick Sergio contributed eight points and 10 rebounds.

Bryson Fonville led the Cardinals in scoring with 21 points.
