South Shore Residents: Mangano Deserted Us After Sandy

Suozzi lays out plan for Hazard Mitigation and Help for Misplaced Residents

(Seaford, NY): In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Ed Mangano made many promises to South Shore residents that he never kept.  Erica Scheier's is just one of many similar stories.

After Superstorm Sandy destroyed Scheier’s home in Seaford, Mangano and his staff visited the devastated marina where she and others had lost nearly everything due to damage from the storm. The County Executive promised residents that he would help them get back into their homes and return to normalcy by providing them the needed constituent services that his office is obligated to provide. Ed Mangano lied to them.

“Ed Mangano promised that he would help me get my life back to the way it was before the devastating superstorm,” said Scheier. “Instead, despite repeated attempts, I have received no assistance from the County Executive’s office.”

To add insult to injury, Mangano used a photo Scheier’s home in Seaford on the cover of the Nassau Recovery Fund flyer, which was used to raise funds for Sandy victims in the wake of the storm.

Tom Suozzi today stood with some of the residents hurt by Ed Mangano’s lack of action and rolled out his plans for helping Nassau County continue to rebuild.

“The County’s inaction in the wake of Hurricane Sandy is completely unacceptable,” said Suozzi. “One year later, Mangano still no County mitigation plan or database of people who were put out of their homes. Nassau County needs a comprehensive database of everyone who has suffered a similar fate to Erica so that these families do not slip through the cracks.”

Suozzi went onto say that Nassau County is well behind the pace of New York City when it comes to establishing plans for future storms of the similar or greater magnitude than Sandy.  Tom Suozzi was the last county executive to unveil a hazard mitigation plan, but no such plan has been created since that the county could use as a roadmap for how to manage an event similar to Sandy. New York City, meanwhile, has issued a comprehensive report entitled “A Stronger, More Resilient New York” that details how the City could improve its infrastructure to be better-prepared for the realities of global climate change.  It identifies needs for everything from beach nourishment to multi-million dollar infrastructure hardening projects throughout the City—almost 450 pages of analysis and recommendations for the entire suite of the City's infrastructure, community needs such as healthcare services and energy, and for discrete neighborhoods to protect them from storm surges, flooding, and wind damage.

“Once again, Ed Mangano is failing residents,” concluded Suozzi. “He has categorically failed to help distressed residents of our communities and has no plan to help prepare the county for future devastating events.”
