Arts Center Offers Chance To Be A Docent

Those wanting a piece of the art world might find GNAC more accommodating, according to one staffer.

You don't need to employee the cutthroat ways of a "Gallery Girl" to become a docent.

The says they are seeking them out. "The Arts Center is looking for talented and articulate volunteers to work as docents in its Gallery," a notice on their Web site reads.

A docent is a volunteer who walks tour groups through a gallery. They often go through extensive training, and have fience competition just to land the volunteer gig.

"I know here it's very easy, because they take on volunteers all the time," said one GNAC staffer.

Almost every major American museum has a wait list for applicants, according to a New York Times article published in 2000. The Metropolitan Museum of Art contends with five inquiries each day, according to the article, and most applicants must wait six months before they are granted an interview.
