Stoptional? Drivers Cruise Through Plaza Stop Sign

In a time-lapse video, 35 vehicles approach a Great Neck Plaza stop sign and a crosswalk. See how many legally stop.

Patch set up a camera inside a Dunkin Donuts at the intersection of North Station Plaza and Park Place in Great Neck Plaza last Friday evening.

In the time-lapse video, 35 consecutive vehicles were tracked as they approached the stop sign and crosswalk at a busy intersection directly across from the Long Island Rail Road station.

Of the 35 vehicles that passed, less than one third actually came to a complete, legal stop. The majority of the vehicles that made complete stops had cross traffic to deal with.

A United Parcel Service truck can be seen running the stop sign and not halting for an elderly pedestrian in the crosswalk — both infractions of the law.

A few drivers did made complete stops with no cross traffic, with rolling stops being most common among many drivers who did not halt. Some vehicles stopped in the crosswalk while others not stopping at all.

With a few drivers stopping for a fraction of a second, a handful of the attempted stops were almost too close to call in terms of legality.
