GNWPCD Urging Proper Disposal of Grease, Oils This Grilling Season

While grilling outside, district offers ways to properly dispose of fats, oils and greases.

Great Neck Water Pollution Control District commissioners are reminding residents that while summer is a great time to grill outside, everyone must do their part to properly dispose of fats, oils and greases.

Fats, oils and greases, produced in abundance during the summer months, are detrimental to home plumbing and very destructive for our public sewer systems, according to GNWPCD Commissioners Jerry Landsberg, Deena Lesser and Steve Reiter

“Pouring grease into your drain will clog up your pipes and pollute the local ecosystem,” said Lesser, in a press release.

GNWPCD officials urge residents to carefully pour grease and similar byproducts into a strong, sealable container once it has cooled. Place the sealed container in the trash for proper disposal.

Properly disposing of cooking grease, fats and oils will help prevent clogging of residential and commercial plumbing, protect our environment and reduce maintenance costs.

For those needing to dispose of a large amounts of used vegetable oil, simply place it in a sealable container and drop it off at the GNWPCD offices located at 236 East Shore Rd. The district will then utilize this grease in its innovative biofuel program, converting the waste product into diesel fuel for its vehicles.
